Solomon Refinery Performance IndicatorsSolomon's Fuels Refinery Performance Analysis is an industry-wide study of comparative performance of the participating refineries in the areas of Profitability, Operations, Maintenance, Manpower and Safety (Solomon Associates). This study is done every two years and the participants are required to submit two years of data for the study. Resolution's Solomon Solution provides the capability to continuously track a plant's Solomon performance indices, and can provide alerts to management whenever a target is missed for a specified interval. At the end of the study, which is about six months from the end of the study period, Solomon publishes the performance results of each participant and compares them with the best in class by region and country and with respect to previous performance analyses. This provides refinery management an insight into their strengths and weaknesses so that they focus on overcoming their deficiencies. Resolution's Solution enables plant management to focus attention on key indicators on a continuous basis, rather than waiting for data to be compiled on a periodic basis. The Resoluton database also greatly facilitates the data collection activity for submission to Solomon.

Considerable effort is required to collect and validate the data required for the study. Data comes from several different sources which could be different computer systems, PC's and maintained in several different formats. The degree of difficulty of obtaining data can vary depending on the level of integration and automation implemented by the participants. With Resolution, all data are maintained in an integrated environment and reports can automatically be generated for the Solomon study in the required format. This saves considerable amount of time and effort, and eliminates mistakes since the data is continuously monitored for validity similar to Solomon's validity checks. RESOLUTION provides an automatic mechanism to track Solomon performance indices on an ongoing basis and alerts management whenever a target is missed for a specified interval. This provides management the means to take remedial action immediately instead of waiting for the study to be done every two years or getting reports internally every quarter. The performance of a refinery can be vastly improved by taking on the spot remedial actions instead of waiting for the reports when the opportunity has passed by.
The resolution starts with a model of the plant, and its units. These can be added using convenient data entry forms. This model can be browsed using a familiar 'explorer' view, allowing a user to navigate through the plant structure, view the associated performance measures, and see associated maintenance events such as shutdowns and slowdowns.
A convenient menu system allows users to select the particular model maintenance task that they need to perform. Additional tasks can be readily added to the menu system to suit site requirements.
Collecting all of the relevant input data is via simple-to-use data entry forms. These forms are accessed via the menu system.
Performance measures, both those entered manually and those calculated by the system, can be viewed interactively. Below an application is showing the values of all performance measures associated with a chosen unit at a time. Not all information is associated with a unit or equipment. Many performance indices are derived from events such as shutdowns, turnarounds, slowdowns, environmental incidents etc. These are also tracked in the system, and each has its own performance measures All results are securely held in the database allowing previous performance measures to be viewed. Reports include the ability to chart or trend the performance measures over any period. This provides valuable insight into a site's improvement over time. |
